Manitou’s MC18 rough terrain forklift a space invader

MANITOU Group has launched its new MC18 rough terrain forklift, which has a compact design with an overall width of 1450mm to allow the machine to manoeuvre into restricted spaces.
Manitou says the MC18 forklift has greater visibility during handling operations because of a new panoramic glazed roof without a metal structure, which allows operators to monitor the load throughout the lifting operation.
Two tempered-glass sheets separated by a plastic film — creating laminated glass — ensures the operator is protected from falling objects, meeting the requirement of ISO 6055 (FOPS) safety standards.
The MC18-4 offers the option of switching from two-wheel to four-wheel drive, whether the machine is in operation or not.
The four-wheel drive mode gives the MC18 improved driveability and traction.
By switching to two-wheel drive, the operator can reach a speed of 25km/h, and Manitou claims fuel consumption is reduced by 12.5 per cent in the handling cycle.
The cab is equipped with a double-skin cover with a tough, rigid section and a flexible insulated section, designed to reduce engine noise, which Manitou claims to be 79dB, compared with the average of 86dB.
Manitou Group’s Lift Truck marketing manager, Patrick Laridan, said the MC18 was designed as a compact forklift to “enable farmers to get around pathways easily”.
“It is suited to market gardeners and nursery people working in difficult terrains,” Mr Laridan said.
The MC18 has a ground clearance of 30cm to give it greater versatility on all types of ground, and makes obstacle clearance easier.
The floor height, accessible without steps, allows the operator to enter and exit the cab more easily.
Access to the engine is via a cap located just behind the operator’s seat, where the operator can check the various levels without needing to lift up the cab or special tools.
