Materials handling equipment specialist Big Lift Trucks (BLT) has launched a range of variable-reach trucks designed for heavy-lift applications in confined spaces in mining operations.

The Meclift ML 5012R series, which has a lifting capacity of 50 t at a load centre of 1,2 m, is a compact machine designed for the efficient, swift and safe handling of heavy equipment and materials like granite blocks.

“The Meclift has a unique reach feature that enables it to handle heavy loads from locations impossible for straight-masted trucks. These machines reduce operating times and also ensure enhanced safety,” says BLT products manager Clinton van den Berg.

“This robust variable-reach truck, which requires a small turning circle, is designed to lift and carry heavy and awkward loads in restricted areas indoors or outdoors.
“An important advantage is that these units have a low-profile design and are suited for operating efficiently in confined spaces,” he says.

The Meclift ML 5012R series, which has a lift height of 6,55 m and an outreach of 2,25 m, is used extensively for lifting and positioning heavy equipment and granite blocks onto and off rail cars and trucks, as well as into and out of containers.
Unlike conventional forklift trucks, this unit is able to work in restricted areas and can reach out for easy loading and unloading of loads heavier than a standard forklift could safely cope with, he explains.

This reach truck, with a machine length of 7,7 m without forks, a width of 3,8 m and a turning radius of 7 m, is the most compact machine on the market in its lifting capacity range.
Telescopic twin booms provide a rela-tively low overall height and also ensure excellent visibility for the operator, says Van den Berg.

Meclift variable-reach trucks are equipped with a low-emission diesel engine and electrically controlled load-sensing hydraulics and variable displacement pumps, combined with CANbus technology for reliable operation.

The company says that the lift carriage has a hydraulic side shift for accurate and effortless positioning. Another important feature is that fork positioning can be altered from inside the cabin, without the operator having to get out to manually adjust the gap between the levers.
Forks are available in different lengths, widths and thicknesses according to exact requirements.

Safety features include service, parking and emergency brakes and optional accessories consist of an automatic stability control and display, air-conditioning units and cameras for extra visibility, he adds.

BLT, which supplies a range of specialist materials handling equipment to mines throughout Africa, also offers a technical advisory, spare parts and support service. Operator training and a condition monitoring service for equipment are also provided.
