An appreciation of the physics of the vehicle is half the battle when driving a forklift
Forklift trucks are the workhorses of the materials handling industry. They might not be the most impressive looking machines, but in terms of increasing productivity, they are without equal. Of course, if operated recklessly, these machines are capable of causing serious injury, and even death. In the following guide, PMV provides tips on how to operate your forklift both safely and effectively.
Tip 1 – Check your ride
Before putting the key in the ignition, you need to ensure that your forklift is safe to drive. Be sure to check for faults in the forklift’s tyres, controls, power source, brakes, steering mechanism, and lift system. It is essential that such a check is performed at least once per shift.
Tip 2 – Drive carefully
The speed at which it is safe to drive a forklift will depend on the context in which it is driven.
For example, a laden forklift should not reach the same speeds as one travelling without a load. Operators should also take time to check whether the driving surface is damaged or slippery before working in a new area. Regardless of time constraints, speed should not come at the expense of operational safety.
Tip 3 – Know your physics
Never make the mistake of thinking that driving a forklift is akin to driving a car. To aid manoeuvrability, forklifts tend to steer using their rear wheels, meaning that they handle differently from conventional automobiles. However, the most important factor to keep in mind is that a forklift’s centre of gravity is much higher than that of a car. In short, these machines are not built for cornering at speed.
Tip 4 – Watch out for pedestrians
Be sure to keep an eye out for pedestrians in your workplace. Ideally, forklift operating zones should be kept separate from pedestrian areas. Also, bear in mind that just because you are looking for them, doesn’t necessarily mean that they are looking for you. For this reason, it is always a good idea to use your horn when entering new areas, and when crossing intersecting warehouse corridors.
Tip 5 – Refuel correctly
Whether your forklift is fuelled by propane, gasoline, or an electrical battery, it is vital that you follow the correct procedures when replenishing the power source. Never fill a machine’s fuel tank while its engine is still running, hot, or smoking. Ensure that all fuels and batteries are stored in designated areas away from ignition sources. Always wear appropriate protective equipment when refuelling or recharging a forklift. Battery charging stations should be clean and well ventilated, and emergency materials should be kept close at hand in case an employee comes into contact with battery fluid.
Tip 6 – Beware of enclosed spaces
Don’t use forklift trucks powered by propane or gasoline for prolonged periods of time in enclosed spaces. When battery-powered units are not available, try to keep in mind that carbon monoxide (CO) is odourless, tasteless, and transparent. Employers must ensure that CO detectors are installed correctly and functional.
