Cargotec recently introduced a line of super-quiet, all electric forklift trucks that has been honored in the United Kingdom by the Noise Abatement Society.

The line, known as the E Series, received the commendation at the 2012 John Connell Technology Awards that were sponsored by the Acoustics Society and were held at the Houses of Parliament on November 6.

The E Series Truck Mounted Fork Lifts (TMFLs) is designed primarily for the loading and unloading vehicles at night in high population areas, use electronic technology to keep the vehicle's noise level below 60 decibels or dB(A).

The PIEK regulations were established in the Netherlands to enforce a 60 dB(A) noise level limit during night-time operations in urban areas. They are widely used across Europe and have been adopted in the U.K. through the Noise Abatement Society.

Cargotec vice president Keith Quigley says that receiving the commendation is "a resounding endorsement of our decision to develop an electric forklift alongside our range of diesel powered trucks of which more than 50,000 have been produced under the market-leading Moffett brand.

Quigley added that it was a pleasure to be mentioned in the same category as some of the leading brands in the vehicle industry, including Toyota and Carrier Transcold.

The operational costs of the Cargotec's E Series forklifts are estimated to be 70% lower than diesel-powered forklifts, based on current serve and fuel costs. By running electric, the environmental impact of disposing of used engine oil has also been removed.

Electric forklifts are also completely emissions free. Compared to diesel gas-powerd lifts, the units are capable of saving up to 200 kilograms of particulate matter over a five-year span.

The E Series is available in two models: The 1.5-ton capacity E2 and the 2.0-ton E4 both use lithium ion batteries. A quieter version of Cargotec's standard mounting kit also reduces noise levels.
