Four New Holland machines, 2 telehandlers and 2 skid steer loaders, which were supplied by Irish distributor Adare Machinery, are helping to boost productivity on a recycling site for Cork-based waste management company Wiser Recycling Ltd.

Wiser Recycling Ltd which operate two companies, Wiser Bins and Advanced Skip Hire, collect domestic and commercial waste, which it separates, sorts and then bales into round bales at their Cork plant. In 2010, the company took delivery of their first New Holland LM1345 telehandler, followed by second telehandler and two New Holland skid steers, which together with a range of attachments are used to handle both raw and baled material at the site.

In early 2011, Wiser further enhanced their New Holland line up, with the L225 skid steer, a 3.6 tonne machine with a rated operating capacity of 1.135 tonnes, with a dump height of more than 2.6 m. followed by a New Holland L223 skid steer, which was supplied with additional rear counter weights, featuring a lift capacity of 1,110 kilos, and with a similar envelope as the more powerful L225.

Machine performance

The 200 series range of New Holland skid steer loaders, comprises 6 skid steer models and 2 compact track loaders, which are designed to increase productivity, fuel economy and provide comfort together with great visibility. With a dump angle (up to 55" on the vertical models) they can provide faster cycle times making it easier and faster to empty all the load of the bucket, and with fuel efficient engines, combined with bigger fuel tanks of 60.5, 75.5 and 96.5 litre capacity, grant more working hours without the need to stop for refilling. All the models in this range benefit from the superior visibility from the large cab, which ensures a safer worksite environment.

Working alongside the two skid steers are the New Holland LM1345 and LM1440 telehandlers. These machines carry out similar duties to the L223 and L225 skid steers – sorting waste, feeding the baler and handling baled refuse.

With its forward reach of 8.65 m and lift capacity of up to 4.5 tonnes, the LM1345 telehandler is the ideal machine for stacking baled material and pushing back stockpiled refuse prior to baling.

All three machines work continuous eight-hour shifts for Wiser Recycling's owner Eoin O'Brien, where economy and productivity are key characteristics.

Why Wiser chose New Holland

"The power of the machines is very impressive and they are fast and highly manoeuvrable, which brings down the cost of baling. Our tonnage costs have come down considerably since we started using them", says Mr O'Brien.

"The manoeuvrability of the LM1345 telehandler is very good and the powershift transmission is very useful for pushing back the baled material" continues Mr O'Brien. The LM1345's large stabilisers also give it plenty of stability when stacking high bales.

Despite the machines' high output, fuel economy is remarkably good, the L223 skid steer for example operating for two full days without refuelling.

Dwain O'Sullivan, who operates the L223 skid steer eight hours a day, is impressed with the comfort and safety of his surroundings: "It's fast, very stable, and has great lifting capacity and the controls are well thought-out. It's also very good for safety – in the cab visibility is excellent so you know what's going on around you and there's plenty of space and lots of legroom making it comfortable to work in all day."

A full range of attachments is available for all three machines, and those working for Wiser Recycling use a mixture of bale grabs, waste grapples, tine rakes, sweepers and various buckets to lift, carry and scoop the different types of loose and baled waste.

The different attachments mean the machines can undertake a range of duties. "Changing attachments is really easy and straightforward – no pressure on hoses, quick-release handles...Top job!" comments Dwain O'Sullivan.

"I would definitely recommend New Holland machines to anyone as they have great power and fuel economy" comments Eoin O'Brien.
