Final Report CeMAT 2005
New CeMAT makes perfect three-point

  • New CeMAT makes perfect three-point landing
  • Successful debut across the board: CeMAT asserts itself as the world's biggest intralogistics event
  • Targets exceeded - more than 50,000 trade visitors
  • Exceptional international appeal: 35 percent of all trade visitors come from outside Germany
  • Exhibitor satisfaction: CeMAT generates scores of valuable new leads

Running from 11 to 15 October 2005 in Hannover, Germany, CeMAT was staged for the first time as a standalone "World Fair for Intralogistics." Even after the first few days, it was clear that CeMAT 2005 was going to exceed all targets. With around 1,000 exhibitors and 75,000 m² of display space, CeMAT has established itself as the global meeting place for the intralogistics sector.

By the start of Day Four of the five-day event, some 38,000 trade visitors had already walked through the turnstiles at CeMAT; by the end of the show on Saturday evening, a total of more than 50,000 attendees were projected.

Sepp D. Heckmann, Chairman of the Deutsche Messe AG Managing Board, offers the following assessment: "The decision we and the industry jointly made to separate out CeMAT from HANNOVER MESSE and rebrand it as a standalone, global event for the technical logistics sector hit the nail on the head. In the past few days, we have been treated to countless presentations of new advances and product launches, confirming CeMAT 2005 as the global marketplace for the growth industry of intralogistics. This is where tomorrow's standards are revealed today."

CeMAT brings top-notch, international decision makers to exhibitor stands
Around 43 percent of CeMAT exhibitors came from outside Germany, including a third from other European nations. But CeMAT's visitor makeup was also highly international: Out of a total share of 35 percent of trade visitors from outside Germany, 11.1 percent were from Asia and 10.7 percent from the USA. This global visitor echo proves that CeMAT has quickly made a name for itself as the one-and-only World Fair for Intralogistics.

"Deutsche Messe AG has marketed CeMAT very well around the world. It's a truly international trade fair", says Josef Morat, Marketing & Key Account Manager for OM Carrelli Elevatori S.p.A. from Italy. Margit Wögerer, who is responsible for Marketing at KNAPP Logistik Automation GmbH from Graz in Austria, agrees: "We were very satisfied with the number and quality of trade visitors right from the first day of the fair. We have had visitors from every continent, including Australia."

And major logistics enterprises like the Jungheinrich Group also lauded the success of the rebranded CeMAT. As Dr. Cletus von Pichler, Chairman of the Board at Jungheinrich in Hamburg, confirms: "CeMAT 2005 is exceeding all our expectations. The international response from all over the world and the high caliber of trade visitors already point to the success of this fair. The products and services showcased by Jungheinrich, and our technical world premieres in particular, have all been very well received."

Other exhibitors like PSI Logistics GmbH from Hamburg, used the opportunity to consolidate existing contacts at the show. "Our relationships with international business partners are extremely important to us. We have had more scheduled appointments at this event than at any other trade fair", notes PSI Managing Director, Wolfgang Albrecht. "CeMAT 2005 is a real source of impetus for our business abroad."

CeMAT generates business deals
Compared with other trade fairs, CeMAT is also unique when it comes to closing business deals: At no other logistics fair are so many deals lined up or firmly concluded. This is illustrated by the fact that more than 48 percent of the attending trade professionals came to Hannover with specific investment plans. One example of visitors' high willingness to invest was demonstrated on the third day of the fair: Kardex Organisationssysteme GmbH from Kronberg, Germany, closed a deal worth millions with a major insurance company, and is anticipating further major deals before the event is over, reported the company's Managing Director, Udo Neumann.

Christoph Hahn-Woernle, Managing Partner of visastore systems GmbH from Stuttgart and Chairman of the CeMAT Executive Committee, had sales plans of his own: Midway through the show, he confirmed that those targets had already been comfortably exceeded.

CeMAT as a showcase for technical innovations
RFID technology has been an all-pervasive theme at this year's CeMAT. The use of Radio Frequency Identification and its significance for intralogistics was discussed at many different forums. At the Siemens AG stand, it was also a key focus: "RFID is a prime issue for us," explains Marketing Manager Heinz Brenner. "At our stand, visitors can see strategic ways of incorporating this technology into the design of highly specialized solutions." He considers it a unique feature of CeMAT that visitors there can concretely visualize all the available options.

A further technological highlight at this year's CeMAT was the deployment of robots in logistics applications. The intralogistics sector is one of many sectors that are now actively seeking new applications for robotics and fully automated systems. SSI Schäfer GmbH from Neunkirchen, for instance, unveiled automatic sliding racks with laser-controlled storage and retrieval units as a world first at CeMAT. Rainer Bröcher, SSI Schäfer's Sales and Marketing Director, gave CeMAT very positive overall marks. Other applications for robotics were showcased at the Robotic Logistics Center, where exhibitors like Kuka, Güdel and Kawasaki launched novel advances in automated logistics.

Apart from product launches, CeMAT offers direct opportunities for technology transfer among R&D experts. The Intralogistics Campus is a platform where universities and institutes can present their latest research findings to potential users from industry and commerce. This is where experts also delve into future trends such as groundbreaking advances in RFID. The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) and the Scientific Association for Technical Logistics (WGTL) combined their resources to put together an authoritative, highly informative program for visitors.

"CeMAT has once again proved that Hannover is the ideal location for technology trade shows of global reach and scope," declared Heckmann.

The next CeMAT will be staged in autumn of 2008.

 10 May 2007
CeMAT 2008 (27 – 31 May):
CeMAT on the growth track
– New exhibitors in all sections of the show
– International congress to be held the day before CeMAT opens
– CeMAT India poised for success

In today’s globalized economy the development and implementation of effective logistics systems have a decisive influence on corporate competitiveness. Intralogistics – i.e. the integration of internal and external logistics systems – is growing faster than almost any other industrial sector. Against this background the intralogistics industry will gather together at CeMAT 2008 Hannover (27 – 31 May). Following on from the highly successful premiere in 2005, preparations are now under way for CeMAT 2008. Deutsche Messe forecasts a significant increase in the number of exhibitors and visitors – a large proportion once again coming from outside Germany

The core content of CeMAT will remain unchanged in 2008. As in the past the focus will be on integrated logistics systems, industrial trucks, forklift trucks, lifting gear, mechanical handling systems, as well as software. These display categories will be extended and enhanced. Nearly all the market leaders will be represented at CeMAT 2008, where they will have the chance to present their product innovations to an international audience.

The top ten new exhibitors
CeMAT got off to a very successful start in 2005. This has prompted a number of new exhibitors to sign up for CeMAT 2008. The top ten new exhibitors are as follows: Clark Forklifts, Mühlheim; Gottwald Cranes, Düsseldorf; SauerDanfoss, Nordborg (Denmark); SIVAplan, Troisdorf; CLS Systems; FKI Logistex, Kettering (United Kingdom), Provost, Neuville en Ferrain (France); Swisslog, Buchs (Switzerland); Daifuku, Tokyo (Japan); and Kuka Robotics.

Specials
CeMAT 2005 focused on industrial robots and packaging technology. These two special displays will reappear in an expanded form in 2008. Robot manufacturers will be located on a dedicated display area in Hall 27, while in Hall 12 the focus will be on packaging systems. Alongside the established group presentation, Deutsche Messe and Wipak GmbH will be staging a new event devoted exclusively to “insulated packagings”. Wipak is a recognized expert in all areas of packaging technology.

New topics in 2008
CeMAT 2008 will focus on several new issues affecting the (intra)logistics sector – for example, the availability of suitable sites and buildings. The demand for logistics real estate far outstrips supply. During CeMAT 2008 property developers and financiers will provide a detailed overview of what’s currently available on the market. For their part visitors and exhibitors will be able to gather information about current and planned projects. A second major issue will be contract logistics. CeMAT 2008 is expected to attract an increased number of exhibitors operating in this segment. Last but not least, CeMAT 2008 will spotlight port logistics. According to the Federal German Transport Ministry, the cargo volumes handled by German seaports and the ports located in the Rhine Estuary will double by the year 2025. This dynamic growth will necessitate the installation of state-of-the-art cargo handling systems. Thanks to its extensive open-air site CeMAT is ideally equipped to present such systems.

Intralogistics Campus
The Intralogistics Campus will once again form part of the CeMAT show. The Scientific Association for Technical Logistics (WGTL) will be responsible for organizing the core program of the Intralogistics Campus, which is also open to non-members of the WGTL. In the interests of even higher quality the line-up of lectures will be streamlined in 2008. Under the Campus umbrella Deutsche Messe will be staging the Intralogistics Career Market. This will provide a new platform for employers, employment agencies, training institutions and universities.

Future of Logistics – the new conference at CeMAT
On 26 May 2008, the day before CeMAT opens to the public, the first-ever international CeMAT conference will take place at the Hannover Conference Center. Subtitled “The Future of Logistics”, this one-day event will examine the key issues confronting the logistics sector in the coming years. More than 300 leading decision-makers (academics, business leaders and policy-makers) are expected to attend.

The congress program will be prepared by various concept groups consisting of experts from all the relevant scientific and industrial disciplines. A specially commissioned study will also provide the basis for defining the congress topics. The thematic spectrum encompasses climate protection, raw materials, health care, disaster relief, future market developments and international collaboration.

The goal is to attract an international audience (at least 80 percent from outside Germany) of top decision-makers from the worlds of business, politics and science.

The Supply Management Institute (SMI) of the European Business School (EBS) in Wiesbaden/Oestrich-Winkel has been entrusted with the task of organizing the CeMAT conference.

CeMAT as an international brand
Compared with other trade show venues in Germany, Hannover attracts a significantly higher proportion of foreign exhibitors and visitors. Deutsche Messe also stages numerous trade shows and exhibitions outside Germany’s borders. Since the year 2000 CeMAT Asia had taken place annually in Shanghai. In the period 10 to 13 October 2007 Deutsche Messe looks forward to welcoming 400 exhibitors from all sectors of the intralogistics industry. This year will also see the premiere of CeMAT India in Bangalore (4 – 7 December 2007). India’s intralogistics market is still in its infancy, with a market volume somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0 billion euros. Strong growth is forecast in the area of construction and infrastructure development. Without a properly functioning infrastructure the country will be unable to achieve its ambitious growth targets in the coming years. Over the past two decades technological progress in the logistics sector has been slow. In view of the large volume of pent-up demand, annual growth rates of 25 percent can be expected. CeMAT India is the ideal platform for intralogistics companies that are planning to expand their business operations on the Indian subcontinent.
