Marking the continuation of a relationship that goes back several years, a group of students and teachers from Alderman’s Green Community Primary School in Coventry recently attended a dedicated open day at the Terex Construction UK manufacturing facility.

The Coventry school has a long-standing relationship with Terex, with the school’s Enhanced Resource Provision (ERP) segment also known as the Ferguson Suite. It is so-named because the staff at Massey Ferguson, which was taken over by Terex in 2001, used to donate money from their pay cheques to support the school.

The students, from Years 5 and 6, enjoyed a tour of the facility, as well as getting up close and personal with some of the plant equipment manufactured on site. They were given an insight into a career in engineering and product design. Terex Construction Coventry General Manager, Gregg Horne, also provided an overview of the opportunities at Terex - which is one of the region’s largest employers.

Commenting on the visit, Deborah Fulford, Headteacher at Alderman’s Green Community Primary School, said: “We strongly believe in going the extra mile for every child here at the school and that means providing an exciting curriculum, both within and outside of the classroom. We have a long-standing relationship with the Terex team and are delighted to be able to facilitate another successful visit, which was thoroughly enjoyed by both our pupils and their teachers.”

Gregg Horne, General Manager at Terex Construction’s Coventry facility, added: “It’s a real privilege to welcome representatives from our local community into the plant to see what we do. We have very much enjoyed having the children from Alderman’s Green Community Primary School on site and we hope they go away with a better idea of a future career in engineering, manufacturing or product design - as well as a few Terex souvenirs!”

The visit was part of a wider initiative spearheaded by National Grid to promote engineering in education. The ‘Imagineering’ programme sees engineers from a wide range of sectors running weekly sessions for students to further aid their development and encourage consideration of a role within the industry. Dawn Castle, Information Management Officer from National Grid, plays a key role in the programme and helped to arrange the school’s visit to Terex Construction.
