Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) is putting the spotlight on its sustainable development initiatives and its advanced technology introductions such as the Vehicle Identification Pass (ViP), a radio frequency identification (RFID)/ and vehicle identification (VID)-based fuel retailing system, at the 16th Water, Energy, Technology & Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2014 to be held from April 14 to 16 at the Dubai International Convention Centre.

A Strategic Sponsor of the event, ENOC is highlighting its wide array of activities that support environmental sustainability and promote energy use efficiency in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 announced by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. ENOC is also highlighting its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives at WETEX, particularly with a focus on integrating technology and sustainability for the welfare of future generations.

Saeed Khoory, CEO of ENOC and Board Member of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, said: “WETEX is a flagship event that highlights the thought leadership of Dubai in promoting energy and water use efficiency in addition to demonstrating the path-breaking initiatives undertaken by the Emirate to promote sustainable development. Bringing together stakeholders from around the world, the event serves as a strong platform for ENOC to demonstrate our commitment to achieving the ‘green economy for sustainable development’ vision announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.”

He added: “This year, we are placing emphasis on highlighting the overall energy resource management initiatives at ENOC as well as the new technologies that we are introducing to strengthen operational efficiency. We are also focusing on CSR activities that make the world a better place to live in by caring for the community and the environment. The strong correlation between environmental sustainability and long-term development is demonstrated through our initiatives that also draw on the latest advances in green technology.”

At the seminars to be held as part of WETEX, Alia Basumara, Senior Compliance Officer (Environment & Energy) at ENOC, will present a paper on ‘Energy & Resource Management Systems in ENOC’ on April 16.

ENOC’s 100 sqm stand at WETEX has been creatively designed to reflect the ‘sustainability’ theme using eco-friendly materials such as sustainable Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) panels and eco-friendly flooring.

Visitors to the stand also have the opportunity to contribute to the ‘Human Fuel’ CSR campaign of ENOC, organised in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Dubai Charity Association.

The flagship CSR initiative of ENOC this year, ‘Human Fuel’ raises funds to support the two entities to address global hunger. Even a contribution of one dirham can make a huge difference to the lives of the hungry, as the amount can feed a child for an entire day. WETEX visitors can make their contributions by simply scanning the QR Code and entering the amount they wish to donate for the noble purpose.

In new technology initiatives, ENOC is presenting its successful RFID-based ViP service, which complements the self-serve facility provided across its service station network during late hours (from midnight to 6am). Commercial users and fleet-owners have the convenience of filling fuel on-the-go without having to pay in cash or use credit cards. ENOC’s ViP facility automatically recognises the registered vehicle being fuelled, and deducts the cost from the registered user’s account without the help of a service attendant. Demos of the service will be conducted at ENOC’s stand.

In sustainability initiatives, ENOC will demonstrate its ‘green service station’ – the first of its kind in the Middle East region. It uses latest technology to recover 99 per cent of the vapour from the dispensers and storage tanks, and has solar powered lampposts and LED lights with a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. It also features sensor type water taps and two-stage flush systems. Carwash water recycling and waste segregation and recycling are other features of the station which meets all global emission standards.

ENOC Lubricants has introduced low SAPS (sulphated ash, phosphorous and sulphur) engine oils, and high quality oils offering superior oil drain period, engine cleanliness and engine life, contributing to lesser emissions such as ENOC Kuwa Speed, ENOC PROTEC FLEX, and ENOC VULCAN 770SLD.

Emirates Gas (EMGAS), a subsidiary of ENOC, has launched several environment-friendly measures including the Cutting Edge Gas (CEG), a new generation product that provides customers with a convenient, cost-effective fuel gas for cutting applications. EMGAS has also launched Pro-Power, an innovative fuelling system that assures improved performance, prolonged engine life, and reduced maintenance and lifecycle costs. Pro-Power is ideal for all industrial sites using forklift trucks, and produces significantly lower emissions than comparable fuels, while also removing the possibility of harmful fuel spillage.

EMGAS is taking the lead in popularising the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner and greener fuel, which reduces carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide emissions, and practically eliminates sulphur and particulate emissions. The company’s fleet of tankers are more energy efficient, and use remote tank gauging systems for optimising capacity utilisation.

Across ENOC, several green measures have been introduced such as replacing all refrigerators with ozone-friendly appliances and usage of LED/solar lights and halogen-free fire extinguishers. The ENOC staff accommodation has a wastewater treatment plant, while the use of smart devices for water and electricity conservation ensures tangible savings annually. ENOC’s headquarter complex achieved a saving of 48 per cent in water use and 7.8 per cent in energy through these initiatives in 2012 compared to 2010.

Over the years, ENOC has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability initiatives and its thought leadership in undertaking innovative CSR initiatives. ENOC has won Asia’s top laurel for Best Corporate Social Responsibility Practices at the Asian Leadership Awards; and The Bizz Award, one of the most prestigious business awards world-wide, for outstanding corporate social responsibility practices.
