In January 2012 Konecranes received an order for the design and components for a Goliath gantry crane. The order was placed by Korean Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HSHI). In this project Konecranes is a subcontractor to HSHI, who will construct the crane in South Korea and ship it to the final destination in Brazil for final assembly.

The Goliath gantry crane will be used to construct hulls and to move loads in OSX Brasil S.A.’s shipyard in São João da Barra, north of the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. With span of 186 meters and lifting capacity of 1,600 tons, the crane will be one of the biggest cranes in the Americas and will allow the assembly of large blocks or modules of offshore vessels.

The new shipyard called OSX Construcão Naval S.A., a subsidiary of OSX Brasil S.A., will be the largest shipyard and offshore construction company in the Americas, with Hyundai Heavy Industries participating with 10 percent and providing technological support to the new company.

HSHI is the world’s fifth largest shipbuilder and a manufacturer of Goliath gantry cranes and other types of cranes. Cooperation between HSHI and Konecranes goes back several years. HSHI’s first technology package order with Konecranes was made in 1995, and this is HSHI’s twelfth order.

“We are very happy that HSHI wanted to continue the long relationship with us. As a result of our cooperation, OSX will get a Goliath crane of the very latest technology,” says Jussi Rautiainen, General Manager, Shipyard Cranes. “During the next coming years, Brazil will be our most important market for shipyard cranes. Each new and happy customer in this region is a great support for us acting on the new crane markets and further developing our regional service network.”
