Efficiency boost for production logistics

Linde Material Handling is launching its logistics train, a new product designed to improve production logistics, at this year's LogiMAT trade fair.

Linde's logistics train comprises a Linde P 50 C trailer with 5 tonnes of pulling force, including the operating unit, as well as four "intelligent" load trailers, which consist of a steel frame with six rollers, a quiet and environmentally-friendly electric lifting device for pallet frames (so-called "dollies"), and a tiller with trailer coupling. The operator can slide loaded dollies onto the load trailer and lift them clear of the ground at the touch of a button. The dolly is then lowered at the destination and slid onto the desired surface. During its journey, the logistics train serves various loading and unloading points.

Linde's logistics train makes it possible for production logistics companies to achieve better handling performance and increased transport volumes. This is due to improved logistics processes that enable ever smaller units and containers to be delivered with ever greater frequency, thereby better serving the "just-in-time" and "just-in-sequence" principles that are now typical in production processes.

As there is less fluctuation when ordering materials for the assembly line, the flow of goods is more consistent and regular. As such, fewer internal journeys are needed within the assembly hall thanks to the simultaneous supply of several material containers on the logistics train. In addition, the reduced risk of accidents has also shown itself to be a further advantage, since the logistics train is often linked to a one-way traffic system. This permits narrower aisles and, in turn, more space to complete processes that add value. The continuous delivery system connected to the logistics train further synchronises procurement and consumption in a systematic manner, thereby allowing intermediary storage areas and inventories to be reduced, which in turn decreases overall material ordering costs.

The Linde P50C compact trailer at the head of the logistics train is driven by a powerful 3-kW AC motor and was designed specifically for use in narrow aisles. The logistic train trailers are designed for longterm stability. As a result of their construction method, using wrap-around steel frames, and the lifting device for load and/or container dollies, the best possible protection is provided when loading materials for transportation, and wear on wheels and damage to floors can be avoided. The trailers feature a central steering axle with additional castor wheels and can lift containers measuring 1200 x 800 mm, 1200 x 1000 mm or 1000 x 600 mm. A trailer's load capacity is around 1000 kg (LT 10) or 1600 kg (LT 16) per lifting device. The lifting device is operated electronically. It is very quiet and is not prone to wear thanks to the spindle drive. Due to its railborne trailers, the logistics train has a small turning radius. For safety reasons, the train is electrically isolated when the fork/dolly is lowered. The logistics train is flexible thanks to its ability to adapt to various types of containers or deployment scenarios.

"The logistics train from Linde Material Handling offers customers the tool they require to organise their production logistics using state-of-the-art technology", said Ralf Dingeldein, Head of the Business Unit New Trucks at Linde MH, when commenting on the development. "Our solution puts into practice our overarching goal of achieving seamless production processes. At the same time, the logistics train increases safety when transporting materials, whilst reducing the number of trucks and operators that are needed", he adds.

Every inch of the logistics train has already been extensively tested in the truck assembly hall at the Linde MH plant in Aschaffenburg, Germany. "We already use it for repeat journeys and direct orders on the assembly line", says Alexander Schmidt, the Product Manager in charge. "In future, any materials needed will be provided on the basis of the "milk-run" principle and put on load frames directly so they can be delivered to the assembly line 'just-in-sequence'". Using the loader or container in frames or dollies removes the need for additional handling equipment at the pick-and-deposit station, such as lifting carts, trucks, or similar vehicles. The material required is simply rolled into the desired position. The same logistics train can be used to supply materials and remove empty packaging.
