Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (President & CEO Geewon Park) has been awarded a contract worth US$120 million (app. 115 billion Won) for the supply of 79 cranes to the Port of Singapore.

Doosan announced on April 15th that PSA Corporation Ltd.(PSA) and Doosan had signed the contract to supply container cranes to the Pasir Panjang Terminal Phase 2, which would be commissioned by PSA, after vying with world renowned companies in an international bidding competition.

Each of the RTGCs (Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes), which will be used for handling containers in container stacking, can bear loads of up to 40 tons. These environmental-friendly and fuel-efficient cranes are much safer than other models since they are each equipped with 16 wheels (twice as many wheels as other ordinary RTGCs).

Doosan will design, manufacture, install, and test the cranes using its own proprietary EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) capabilities for delivery in December 2009.

This new order pushes the total number of RTGCs ordered by the Port of Singapore to 246 in the past 15 years. With the first order of 45 RTGCs back in 1993, Doosan set a record by supplying all the RTGCs in operation at the Pasir Panjang Terminal, supplying 42 units in 2004, 80 units in 2005, and 79 units next year.

Yong-Gyun Chung, Vice-President and Head of Material Handling Equipment Business Unit, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, said, "The Port of Singapore boasts the highest cargo volume in the world. That's why there is such a high demand for port cranes, and the competition for contracts is accordingly fierce. We were able to win the contract by satisfying the customer's demand for environment-friendly cranes that also consume the lowest amount of fuel at the same time."

Doosan expects to win further orders from PSA, as it plans to expand its port in order to handle the rapid increase in shipping volume resulting from the economic boom in South East Asia and China.
