IRVINE, Calif. -- (April 7, 2008) – Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc. (TMHU) sponsored a tree-planting at the Oso Lake Reservoir in Rancho Santa Margarita on April 5. More than 100 volunteers, comprised of Toyota associates, along with scouts and unit leaders from all over the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts and representatives from the Arbor Day Foundation, worked to plant 100, 24-gallon, 8-foot-tall trees at the county’s popular recreational hub.

Indigenous trees including Coastal Redwoods, California Sycamores, Coastal Live Oaks and Italian Cypress were planted at the 100-acre lake which is home to the Oso Lake Boy Scout Camp and supports valuable scouts programs including: water conservation, catch and release bass fishing, boating and paleontology activities. The site, which is leased from the Santa Margarita Water District, also is open to other non-profit youth organizations with reservations.

“We’re very excited to have sponsored this tree planting and to have such a tremendous response from our associates, the Boy Scouts and the community,” said Shankar Basu, president and CEO of TMHU. The trees that were planted will benefit the Boy Scouts and O.C. youth organizations for years to come. That’s gratifying for all of us.”

This effort is the latest in TMHU’s partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation and is part of the company’s overall global environmental stewardship program. Irvine-based TMHU, the number one supplier of lift trucks in the United States, first partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation in 2006 with the goal of helping reforest America. Since then, 20,000 trees have been planted in national forests that have been damaged by wildfires, insects and disease. In 2008, the company increased its commitment to the Arbor Day Foundation and will plant a tree for every lift truck sold this year, which is estimated to result in an additional 30,000 trees being planted in early 2009.

“The Arbor Day Foundation is pleased that Toyota Material Handling is committed to improving the communities where their employees live by planting trees,” said Jennifer Boetcher, program manager for the Arbor Day Foundation. “Thousands of kids and adults will gather at the Oso Lake Boy Scout Camp each year for camping events, festivals, picnics and other events, and they will benefit from the shade these trees will provide.”
