Cargotec has won a contract to supply six Kalmar E-One² rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes to Namport in Namibia for increasing operational efficiency at their Walvis Bay port. The RTGs will be delivered during the second half of 2010. The order was booked in the  fourth quarter 2009 order intake.

The 7+1 wide and 1-over-5 high RTGs will be equipped with an autosteering and container verification system, Kalmar Smartrail® and remote diagnostics. Kalmar E-One² is the newest RTG model and meets the latest safety and environmental demands whilst remaining productive and cost-effective.

Smartrail® steers the RTG along virtual tracks, relieving the driver of the need to steer and allowing him to travel at maximum speed between lifts and to concentrate fully on picking up and setting down containers.

Cargotec’s Vice President, Yard Cranes, Raimo Ukkonen, commented, “The new Kalmar E-One² RTGs are used to stack containers with an increased stacking density than the counterbalanced equipment Namport is currently using.  This enables much more effective use of space and the new RTGs will effectively increase the port’s terminal capacity by 42%. The RTGs will be fitted with twin lift spreaders which provide a capacity of 50 tonnes to further increase handling efficiency and supports faster ship turnaround times.”

“We will also provide Namport with on-site service support personnel to ensure that the terminal benefits from the highest machine availability. On-site service is backed by our global network of experienced maintenance technicians”, Raimo Ukkonen concluded.
