Alta Lift Truck Services joined GourmetGift-Baskets.com in supporting the Susan G. Komen’s Passionately Pink for the Cure Saturday, August 15th, when the world’s largest cupcake was unveiled and inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records at the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise Classic Car Show in Detroit. Weighing in at 1,224 pounds, the 4 foot tall cupcake, shattered the previous world record of 151 pounds.

Alta Lift Truck Services volunteered the services of a Yale GLC155CA fork lift with a 15,000-lb. lifting capacity. “Alta is proud to participate in this fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” said Steven Greenawalt, owner of Alta Lift Truck Services.  He also said that prior to the event, they encouraged local employees to stop by and try a piece, which would add to the funds raised for breast cancer awareness.

“We started off with a goal of a 7,000 pound cupcake but fate intervened on Friday morning when the baking was supposed to be complete," said Ryan Abood, chief executive officer of GourmetGiftBaskets.com. "The huge 8 by 8 foot oven was opened and we found that the weight of the expanding batter crushed one of the main convection tubes blowing hot air into the heart of the cupcake causing the batter to separate, liquefy and crush the center of the cupcake from the inside out." With only 24 hours left until the official weigh-in, the brilliant baking crew went into overdrive creating a new, customized mold and fresh batch of batter using an estimated 200 pounds of flour, 200 pounds of sugar, 200 pounds of butter and oil and 1,000 eggs. The cupcake baked for 12 hours and was loaded onto a refrigerated truck and driven 52 miles to the Dream Cruise where it was unloaded with the help of an Alta forklift and placed on a floor scale for an official weigh-in.
