The Fork Lift Truck Association has declared Nick Moore, Stock and Yard Manager of Brett landscaping and Building Products Ltd., the winner of the first FLTA Safety Champion Award.

Sponsored by Briggs Equipment UK, the award recognises those who have shown exceptional commitment to positive change at their site, making it safer for all who work on, or in close proximity to, fork lift trucks.

Nick was nominated by the company’s SHEQ manager for his remarkable work, improving safety at their eight hectare site in Barrow-upon-Soar. As well as developing an improved traffic management system, he secured £137,000 in capital expenditures to implement this, and other safety projects. This resulted in an additional 3,450m2 of useable stockyard, wider roadways, enclosed pedestrian walkways, improved road markings, elimination of vehicle queuing on roads, and more.

Managing contractors, Nick ensured the site could safely operate while improvement work was underway. Since most construction within the active stockyard had to be undertaken out of hours, he worked weekends to see the job to completion. During this time, there were no reported incidents involving any of the contractors.

FLTA Chief Executive, Peter Harvey, explains: “Nick Moore is a very worthy winner of the inaugural Safety Champion Award. Such dedication to improving safety, and the extent of his achievements is truly admirable, and deserves recognition.

“Of course, we must also give honourable mention to our runners up. Mark Jackson of Babcock Marine and Chris Burley of Walkers Transport came second and third, respectively. Both have gone the extra mile, demonstrating a real commitment to improving site safety.
