Kalmar, part of Cargotec, highlights the performance- and safety-enhancing features of its G-generation reachstackers, named Gloria, at the CeMAT exhibition in Hannover, Germany, on 19-23 May 2014.

Less than one year since launch, the Kalmar Gloria reachstackers have created new standards of productivity for cargo handling operations. With some thirty different Gloria models available, designated for container, intermodal, barge and industrial handling, Kalmar offers the industry's widest range of reachstacker models.

To meet the needs of the vast array of cargo handling applications, Kalmar provides a comprehensive choice of features to improve performance and profitability whilst ensuring the ultimate in safety and environmental enhancements for any operation.

Saving fuel and the environment
Providing a total lifting capacity of 45 tonnes, stacking up to 6 high (up to 5 high on the intermodal), Gloria is the most fuel efficient reachstacker on the market today. A choice of different ECO driving modes - power, normal and economy - contribute for up to 20% fuel savings. A 10% fuel saving and reduction in emissions can be achieved with the new automatic start/stop function.

Reduced total cost of ownership
Simpler routine maintenance with longer service intervals delivers a significant contribution to lowering the costs of ownership. Total costs of ownership can be reduced even further by replacing the normal mechanical transmission with a Kalmar Power Split (KPS) solution, new technology soon coming to the market. KPS combines the mechanical and hydrostatic travel drive to join the best features of both technologies. Drivers can also now continuously monitor individual tyre pressures. Not only does this reduce tyre wear but it also makes it simpler to avoid dangerous blowouts.

Further new technology coming soon is the Kalmar Tyre Life eXtension (TLX) drive axle option which contributes to the reduction of operating costs by allowing independent rotation of each drive wheel. This reduces tyre wear and improves both manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency.

The Kalmar Powersplit drive line allows optimised drive characteristics over the entire speed range, providing more efficient handling and increased throughput with up to 40%  fuel and emission savings.  This new green technology will soon be available.

Smart safety features
Kalmar's G-generation machines feature innovative technology to significantly enhance safe operation. The Kalmar Personal Proximity System allows the operator to react before a dangerous situation arises by detecting unexpected obstacles or colleagues approaching from out of view. Additionally, Gloria features a Reverse Aid Warning System. Equipped with external sensors and a reversing camera integrated into the rear counterweight, it covers an area from 50cm up to 9 metres. It provides a warning via an ultrasound and an interior display, should the system detect an obstruction or person close by.

Safety is further enhanced with a new optional automatic fire suppression system, fire alarm and fire extinguisher. The engine and transmission compartment system is based on high pressure water mist that can be recharged. The fire suppression system also works as a fire alarm with a warning lamp inside the cabin.

The Kalmar Control System allows optimisation of safety settings by defining limits to drive speeds, as well as setting lift height restrictions, load centre controls and more. Combined with information form Tyre Pressure Monitoring, it all adds to more precise control of stability, handling and overall safety.

Unrivalled working environment
The EGO cabin takes operator comfort to new levels, with key highlights being the Kalmar patented side-tilting steering wheel and ergonomically designed joystick control. With 90% all-round visibility, the operator now has the best view ever of the working area. The cabin also boasts a head-up display with LED indicator, electronic climate control adjustable for different environmental conditions, and a human machine interface, all of which combine to improve operator functionality and reduce fatigue.

Maximum uptime
Kalmar Gloria reachstackers are equipped with fuel-efficient, high-performance power trains and reliable, low-emission Volvo EU stage 3B or Cummins EU stage 3A engines, which are prepared for EU Stage 4 and EPA Tier 4 final compliance. Linked to a ZF transmission, they supply ample power and torque for rapid acceleration and safer manoeuvrability, even at low rpm's.

Furthermore, to maximise uptime, Kalmar is the only manufacturer to offer, as standard, an electrical redundant CAN bus control system which locates and automatically corrects any possible failures in the CAN bus operation until the next planned service is due.

Continuous improvement
Mikael Persson, Vice President, Reachstackers and Empty Container Handlers at Kalmar is delighted with the popularity Gloria since its launch: "Kalmar Gloria represents a true milestone in reachstacker design. Since 1980s, we've produced nearly 10,000 reachstackers for cargo handlers around the world, and this is, without doubt, the best machine we've ever built, with unique features contributing to it becoming the benchmark for productivity, safety and the lowest costs of ownership. "

Stefan Johansson, Director Sales and Marketing, Kalmar Reachstackers and Empty Container Handlers, adds: "Continuous improvement is a hallmark of the Kalmar brand and the latest project for a diesel and LNG (liquefied natural gas) powered Kalmar reachstacker clearly shows that. This new prototype dual-fuel reachstacker was demonstrated to customers in January this year."

Kalmar offers the widest range of cargo handling solutions and services to ports, terminals, distribution centres and to heavy industry. Kalmar is the industry forerunner in terminal automation and in energy efficient container handling, with one in four container movements around the globe being handled by a Kalmar solution. Through its extensive product portfolio, global service network and ability to enable a seamless integration of different terminal processes, Kalmar improves the efficiency of every move.

Kalmar is part of Cargotec. Cargotec's sales totalled EUR 3.2 billion in 2013 and it employs approximately 11,000 people. Cargotec's class B shares are quoted on NASDAQ OMX Helsinki under symbol CGCBV.
