A land based rig incorporating J D Neuhaus handling equipment has been supplied by National Oilwell Varco – Dreco Energy Services ULC. This was delivered in late summer this year to United Oilfield Services, and the BOP handling equipment supplied with this contract comprised two J D Neuhaus Profi 20 Ti-H hoists, each equipped with overhead rail mounting motorised trolleys to provide individual 20 tonne lift capacities. A requirement of this handling equipment was that it should be CE marked and ATEX certified.

JDN hoists are all manufactured according to current design specifications and standards contained in:
• Machine Directive 98/3, 94/9CE (ATEX), EN14492-2, EN13463-1
• Relevant section of ANSI/B30.16
• API 7K
Each hoist is tested with 25% overload and certified accordingly. JDN lifting and handling equipment is also in use on Jack-Up rigs, Semi-Submersibles, Drill Ships and FPSO’s.

The Profi range of hoists manufactured by JDN can be supplied to cover individual lift capacities from 0.25 up to a full 100 tonnes. They can be either air or hydraulically powered, and this equipment was specified as hydraulic as there was an existing power source for this on site. Individual hoists can also be supplied with trolleys which can provide for manual, reel chain or motorised lateral movements of hoists along their overhead support beam.

The hoists benefit from a compact all-steel cast iron construction with true vertical lifts, and also incorporate integrated overload protection systems on hoists of 1 tonne capacity and upwards. They feature a 5:1 safety factor and 3:1 tensile strength, together with full traceability by a JDN unique parts marking system. A self adjusting fail-safe brake is incorporated, together with adjustable overload of 90 – 125%, while the equipment is also explosion proof and spark resistant. Highly efficient performance and reliability is provided with high lift/lower speeds and low sound emissions. This is combined with 100% duty rating – ie no downtime, based upon a modern design with lube-free operation and minimum maintenance requirements. An integrated emergency stop is incorporated in the main power supply for hoists up to 20 tonne capacity, and all units are insensitive to dust, humidity and otherwise adverse or hazardous operating conditions.

Standard features include:
• Ex-classification: Ex II 2 GD IIA T4/Ex II 3 GD IIB T4
• Temperature range: -20°C to +70°C
• ISO/FEM rating hoist: M3 (1 Bm)
• ISO/FEM rating chain: M3 (1 Bm)
• Trolleys with anti-drop and anti-climb devices
• Worldwide service
