An academy that trains forklift truck drivers for working at night in a busy pallet hub operation has been nationally recognised by industry professionals.

Palletforce's innovative project was highly commended in the People Development category at the IFW Awards.

"We were thrilled to be named as a finalist for our category in the IFW awards, but to have this extra recognition for our investment in our staff is fantastic," said Palletforce Sales and Marketing Director Dave Holland.

The member-owned network established the academy in 2010 at its 400,000 sq ft Hub.

Its aim is to ensure drivers working during the busy night time period have the skills and knowledge to work efficiently and safely, despite the extra pressures.

Academy trainees learn while they earn, gain their counter balance licence and if they pass gain employment working for a company that continues to grow and remains strong despite the difficult economic conditions.

Several trainees have already passed through the academy and gone on to work for Palletforce.

The establishment of the academy was also a contributing factor to the recent Investors In People accreditation achieved by Palletforce.

"Working with people who are highly skilled, well trained and knowledgeable is simply the best way to ensure a smooth operation," said Dave.

"We work with the best transport companies and the best employees to offer the best service, which is why we are continuing to win new clients and new members."
