Essex-based Ovenden Papers is to fit Michelin tyres on its entire forklift truck fleet, as well as its delivery vehicles, following a puncture-free 12-month trial.

The family-owned paper merchant has historically used Michelins on its delivery vehicles, but budget branded solid rubber tyres across its industrial fleet.

However, joint managing director James Ovenden says the trials, which involved using Michelin's XZM radials, demonstrated significant performance benefits and cost-savings. Hence the wholesale change to an all the Michelin tyres policy.

"We have been both surprised and impressed by the differences between economy tyres and Michelin fitments for our forklifts," states Ovenden.

"The trial that Michelin set up lasted 750 hours, which is much longer than we are used to, and there were no punctures at all – even though we operate on high-risk surfaces," he adds.

Ovenden also asserts that drivers report barely feeling bumps from the uneven surfaces. "As well as benefiting staff, this also means our machines are likely to last longer, as they will be better protected from shocks and jolts," he suggests.

Ovenden Papers' industrial fleet comprises four high-reach trucks and six counter-balance trucks. The three vans and 19 HGVs on its delivery fleet also operate on Michelin tyres, and all tyres are serviced at ATS Euromaster's Waltham Abbey centre.
