(Springfield, MO) -- On Tuesday, one of the largest shipping companies in the nation unveiled a new hydrogen-powered forklift fleet.
FedEx got a $1.3 million grant from the Department of Energy to convert 35 electric-powered forklifts to hydrogen fuel users at its Springfield facility.
Company leaders say it now only takes about three minutes to charge a forklift for ten hours of work.
"Our old electric forklifts would run for eight hours, but would have to recharge for eight hours before we could use them for eight more hours," says Bill Logue, president and C.E.O. for FedEx Freight. "If we need to use these things around the clock, we could with a three to four minute refueling."
FedEx says the new forklifts only produce water vapor emissions, which it says is good for the environment.
The company plans to study how the new technology performs and see if it might be a viable option to implement system-wide.
