Caterpillar Inc. has announced the introduction of the new Cat C3.4B, C4.4 ACERT and C6.6 ACERT, the three latest additions to the Cat Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB technology industrial engine line up. The new models cover the horsepower band from 60-174 hp (45 -130 bkW) and provide more engine options for OEMs of agricultural, construction, material handling and general industrial equipment. All of these engines are available with a wide choice of options which are well suited for compact and midrange equipment.

The new C3.4B offers industry leading power density and compactness suitable for many application requirements. The compact engine provides more power with ratings from 60 - 115 bhp (45-86 bKw) and high torque up to 310 lb-ft (420 Nm). It features a dependable common rail fuel injection system, smart waste-gated turbocharger, aftercooler and is electronically controlled to deliver world-class performance and fuel economy.

Complementing the midrange of these engines is the new C4.4 ACERT providing 80-174 bhp (60-130 bKw). The popular 4.4 liter, 4-cylinder engine has received a significant upgrade and now provides a 22% increase in power to 174 hp (130 bKw). Depending on the power required, it is equipped with a single or series turbocharger. The newly designed head, block and common rail fuel system delivers excellent fuel economy and class leading torque up to 553 lb-ft (750 Nm). (The single turbo version is intercooled and provides improved power and torque; the series turbo model delivers extra power density and faster response.) The new platform features a class leading range of options and aftertreatment configurations for maximum, reliable productivity and ease of installation.

The new C6.6 ACERT is a 6.6 liter platform delivering 120-174 bhp (89-130 bKw) and an excellent peak torque of up to 609 lb-ft (825 Nm) at low engine speed. The high torque capability and low end response make this an excellent choice for many machines that currently utilize engines over 175 bhp (130 bkW).

The addition of the C3.4B, C4.4 ACERT and C6.6 ACERT brings the total Cat Industrial Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB engine count to fifteen. The three new engines join the previously announced Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB platforms:

New Model HP bKW Aspiration

• C3.4B 60 – 115 45 - 86 Turbocharged

• C4.4 ACERT 80 – 174 60- 130 Turbocharged

• C6.6 ACERT 120 – 174 90 -130 Turbocharged

Announced in April 2009:

• C7.1 ACERT 175 – 300 130 – 225 Turbocharged

• C9.3 ACERT 275 - 410 205 – 305 Turbocharged

Through extensive Caterpillar application and integration experience, these new engine platforms have optimized fuel consumption to the actual operating cycles of off-highway machines. Compared to existing Tier 3/Stage IIIA engines, these new engines produce fuel consumption improvements across the entire horsepower band. Fuel economy improvements can be subject to application, ratings and operating conditions. The C3.4B, C4.4 ACERT and C6.6 ACERT will begin production and distribution prior to 2012, the year that Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emissions standards take effect for this power category of engines. The C7.1 ACERT and C9.3 ACERT will be available prior to 2011, the year that Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emissions standards take effect for this power category of engines.

When completely unveiled, the Cat Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB industrial engine lineup will include over twenty models from 11-1200 hp (9-895 kW). As with all Cat ACERT Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB compliant engines, ACERT Technologies are the key enabler to achieve a significant 90% reduction of Particulate Matter (PM) and a 45% reduction of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx)
