On July 30, 2009, a new warehouse safety standard takes effect in Germany. Known as the DIN EN 15635 standard, it regulates the procedures for, as well as the overall scope of rack inspections. Companies can now take advantage of an international team of trained Jungheinrich rack inspectors to carry out the inspections.

“In Germany racks are subject to the Plant Safety Act, according to which operators of rack systems are individually responsible for checking their racks at least once a year,” explains Marco Harder, Head of Rackings and Storage Equipment at Jungheinrich. The new DIN EN 15635 standard, which goes into effect on July 30 in Germany, 2009, regulates the procedures involved in those rack inspections.

Jungheinrich already offers rack inspections in a number of European countries. These inspections are carried out by specially trained rack inspectors during normal warehouse operations. The inspections include checking for obvious defects as well as verifying adherence to approved load limits as well as the relevant rules and safety measures. According to Harder, the following rack types are subject to routine inspection: pallet racks, cantilever racks, drive-in and drive-through racks as well as gravity flow racks, multi-storey systems and small parts shelvings.

By now Jungheinrich has conducted a large number of rack inspections, and continues to train new rack inspectors in response to the strong growth in demand. Currently Jungheinrich has a total of some 40 certified rack inspectors across Europe.
