Cargotec’s Kalmar business area has been awarded a three-year service contract to supply empty container handling capacity to the Port of Gothenburg’s container terminal in Sweden. The port is buying the capacity it needs from Kalmar on a ‘per-hour’ basis, equivalent to seven DRF100 reachstackers, and so the responsibility for ensuring the highest levels of machine availability falls on Kalmar. By selecting this way of securing the handling capacity it needs, the Port of Gothenburg gains considerable peace of mind.

Svante Alveronn, General Sales Manager, Sweden, Kalmar Industries, said: “Kalmar has worked closely with the Port of Gothenburg for more than 40 years, which makes it easy for both of us to expand our co-operation to more sophisticated solutions.

The port has a mixed fleet of Kalmar straddle carriers, fork lift trucks, reach stackers and terminal tractors. We feel that this new contract is a breakthrough in providing customer-focused solutions.”

Reachstackers are one of the most flexible solutions for handling containers in small and medium sized ports. Kalmar’s DRF100 is a dedicated empty container handling machine that is both extremely reliable and has excellent performance. Its engine features low emissions, smooth, automatic gear shift and ergonomic driver controls.

The reachstackers will be supplied with Kalmar’s Remote Monitoring Interface (RMI), a system that enables the operation of a large number of machines to be monitored remotely by a single operator in the terminal control room. RMI allows the control room staff to monitor operations in real time, being aware of alarms, driver acknowledged information and operational data.

The Port of Gothenburg is the largest port in Scandinavia and is situated on Sweden’s west coast. Last year the port handled 840 000 TEU and is a major goods hub for Sweden, one of the most trade dependent countries in the world. The port’s vision is to become the natural goods hub for Northern Europe.
